Aztalan is the largest and most important archaeological site in Wisconsin. Along with the legendary Pyramids of Rock Lake, it is one of the greatest unsolved mysteries of the 19th Century. We are still learning about it's secrets. Excavations are continuing, and it's tales are
still being unraveled. Known as the Mississippian Indians, they built great Mounds for both Celestial Ceremonies, and Sacred burial sites. The two most significant mounds at Aztalan, are the Pyramid of the Sun and the Pyramid of the moon, which are facing each other in the central plaza. There are also Conical mounds on the Northwestern side of the village. The indigenous people of Aztalan farmed, crafted pottery, made stone artifacts, tools, and fish traps. they built small houses, and stockade walls surrounding the village. This native culture practiced spiritual beliefs, and had a social and political system. Aztalan is located on the banks of the Crawfish River, which is part of the Mississippi Watershed. They had a constant fresh water source and commerce. There was no written language.
